The
oppression in JCPS Schools (Louisville) seems to be a major problem,
and therefore, that's why they react like monarchist reactionaries at
any hint or whisper of any threat to the status quo. A Black man
standing at a podium saying the word “change” over and over again
was enough to scare some. Or streets full of Black folks with smart
phones, filming the police riots in Ferguson, Missouri right now.
JCPS is famous for being the school system that got Brown v. Board
of Education (1954) overturned (SCOTUS, 2006).
Louisville
media reported that a JCPS teacher (unnamed in the article) tried to
physically take the $200 device from a student who was “caught”
using it during their class. During the ensuring incident, the
student was pissed off about the thievery of his expensive personal
property, and said so. “[Garrett Worful]'s teacher asked him to
stop using his cell phone in class. He then threatened his teacher to
the point where the teacher had to leave the classroom for her
safety. When officers arrived, they say Worful continued to fight
when school officials and police.” “Police were eventually able
to get handcuffs on him and take him to jail. Woful is facing
“Assault, Disorderly Conduct, Terroristic Threatening, Resisting
Arrest, and Trespassing charges” (WHAS11.com, 2012). This incident
occurred at Southern High School on Preston Highway in Louisville.
Since we
live in a Postmodern Era, with the onslaught of the Internet, and the
many changes it has brought, many cultural changes have taken place
in Amerika. One of those major changes is the use of smart phones.
Smart phones can revolutionize a person's life. Like the Internet,
only mobile. The possibilities are as endless as the Internet. And
that's why everybody in Amerika has a Smart Phone. Schools should
either allow Smart Phones in the classroom, or assign mobile devices
for the children throughout the day. With school-issued mobile
devices, the schools can have great control over the content that's
being accessed by the students. Without school-issued mobile devices,
then personal smart phones should be allowed, especially considering
the empowering democratic potential.
